Susan needed antibiotics to fight a serious bacterial infection. However, she only had enough money to buy branded medicines for a treatment of 3 days. She got a little better, but the infection came back with a vengeance, and she needed to be hospitalized. Fortunately, some relatives pitched in and helped pay for the bills. Susan was lucky.
Many similar incidents happen daily, and do not always have a happy ending mainly due to the prohibitive cost of branded drugs. Low-income families are especially vulnerable.
Struck by the plight and predicament of many people, we decided to do something concrete about it. Thus in September 2003 was born Erikagen, Inc. – a modest private sector effort both to educate Filipinos about generics, and to provide them with access to quality affordable generic medicines. Erikagen is the owner/operator of Generika Drugstores.
The venture started slowly and cautiously, opening its first outlet in May 2004 in Montillano street, Alabang. As of April 2008, 16 company-owned outlets are fully operational in strategic locations of Metro Manila, Laguna and Cavite...
